- Doris E. Raether, 97, of the Augusta Area Nursing Home, passed away Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.
Doris Eva Raether, daughter of Herman and Susan (Clark) Senske, was born Sept. 21, 1914 in Bridge Creek Township, rural Augusta. As a child she attended Dells Country School and graduated from Augusta High School in 1932. She attained her teaching degree from Eau Claire Normal School and started her teaching career in 1934. Doris taught 1 year at Fairchild Country School, at Kirkham Valley Country School, Evergreen Country School in Wilson Township and later at Oakridge Country School. After the consolidation of the country schools in 1964, she took a position at the Augusta Elementary School, where she taught 1st grade. She retired from teaching in May of 1978.
Doris married Lawrence Raether on June 11, 1938 at Grace Lutheran Church in Augusta. The couple lived most of their married life in the Town of Bridge Creek, rural Augusta. She was a great housewife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. Over the years she enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, fishing, gardening, playing cards, working crossword puzzles and helping with Troubled Waters 4-H Club. She was a lifetime member of Grace Lutheran Church in Augusta, where she enjoyed working with the ladies aid, attending Bible classes and she also volunteered at Bethesda's Thrift Shop. She was a charter member and instrumental in the formation of the Augusta AARP Chapter. After her husband's death she moved to Osseo where she lived for 20 years, returning to Augusta in 2008, when she entered the nursing home.
She is survived by 4 sons, Donald of Covington, Virginia, Loren (Judy) of Delafield, Duane (Linda) of Augusta, Arnold (Kathy) of St. Paul, MN; 2 daughters, Sylvia (Ronald) Rindahl of Janesville, Marcia Raether of Santa Monica, CA; several grandchildren and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, on July 19, 1988; two brothers, Everett and Harry Senske; and 2 infant grandsons.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, with burial in the West Lawn Cemetery, both in Augusta. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
